Study Schedule

Build your study plan.

Calculus builds on itself — concepts from earlier units are the foundation for everything that follows. Don't skip ahead and don't leave limits behind.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work sequentially through all 10 units. Units 1–8 overlap with AP Calculus AB — if you've already taken AB, you have a head start. Spend extra time on the BC-only content: Units 9 (parametric, polar, vector) and 10 (infinite series) are the hardest and most novel sections. Use Thea practice questions after each unit.

📅 1 Month Before

Run practice problems across all 10 unit types. The series and convergence tests in Unit 10 are particularly detail-heavy — make sure you know which test to apply and why. Practice free-response justification: correct notation and reasoning earn you points even when the final answer isn't perfect.

🌙 Week Before

Take a full timed practice test. Review your graphing calculator skills — you'll need it for Part B of both sections. Make sure you know which calculator functions are permitted and how to use them efficiently.

☀️ Night Before

Light review only — go over key formulas and theorems. Make sure your calculator is charged and approved. Get a full night of sleep; sustained problem-solving over 3 hours requires real mental stamina.

Format
Hybrid Digital — Bluebook + Paper Booklet

The 2026 AP Calculus BC Exam is a hybrid digital exam. You'll complete the multiple-choice section and view free-response questions in the College Board's Bluebook testing app, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper exam booklet that is collected for scoring.

What to Bring

  • A device with the Bluebook app installed and your College Board login ready (memorize it — saved passwords won't work)
  • An approved graphing calculator (required for Part B of each section)
  • Several No. 2 pencils and black or blue pens for the paper booklet
  • A valid photo ID if required by your school

What NOT to Bring

  • Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized electronics
  • Notes, formula sheets, or reference materials
  • Unapproved calculators (check the AP Calculator Policy for the approved list)

Note: You may not take both the AP Calculus BC and AP Calculus BC Exams in the same year.

Exam Structure
Two Sections · ~3 Hours Total

Section 1: Multiple Choice — 42 Questions (50% of score)

  • Part A: 29 questions, 62 minutes — no calculator permitted
  • Part B: 13 questions, 38 minutes — graphing calculator required

Section 2: Free Response — 6 Questions (50% of score)

  • Part A: 2 questions, 30 minutes — graphing calculator required
  • Part B: 4 questions, 60 minutes — no calculator permitted

Questions include algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and general functions presented in analytical, graphical, tabular, and verbal forms. Free-response answers must be handwritten in a paper exam booklet.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. Most colleges grant credit or placement for a score of 3 or higher, though requirements vary by institution and major.

AP Calculus BC FAQ.

AP Calculus BC covers the equivalent of a first-semester college calculus course — limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications. AP Calculus BC covers all of AB's content plus additional topics including parametric equations, polar coordinates, vector-valued functions, and infinite sequences and series, equivalent to a full year of college calculus. You cannot take both exams in the same year.

Yes — a graphing calculator is required for Part B of both exam sections. However, it is not permitted for Part A of either section, so you need to be comfortable working without one too. Check the AP Calculator Policy for the approved list of models.

AP Calculus BC is considered one of the more rigorous AP math courses, but it's very manageable with strong algebra and trigonometry skills going in. The course builds logically — limits lead to derivatives, which lead to integrals — so keeping up throughout the year is important. Students who practice solving problems (not just reading about them) consistently tend to do well.

Extremely important. AP Calculus graders award points for correct reasoning and notation, not just final answers. If you write a correct numerical answer without showing the calculus work that supports it, you may receive little or no credit. Practice writing clear, complete solutions using correct mathematical notation throughout the year — not just before the exam.

Registration

Register, or confirm your registration.

Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
