Intro to AP Computer Science A
In AP Computer Science A, you'll learn to think computationally and write programs in Java — one of the most widely-used languages in software development, enterprise systems, and Android app development.
How do you design objects and methods that work together to model real-world problems? What makes an algorithm efficient, and how do you trace through code to predict what it will do?
AP CS A builds a foundation in object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithm design that prepares you for college-level computer science and programming careers.
The AP Computer Science A Exam is scheduled for May 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM.
The AP CS A exam tests your ability to read, trace, and write Java code — both in multiple-choice format and in free-response questions where you write complete methods and classes.
Thea AP Computer Science A Study Kits.
Below, you'll find Thea's Study Kits for the AP Computer Science A Exam. The 2025–26 curriculum uses four redesigned units. Unit 4 (Data Collections) carries the most weight at 30–40% of the exam.
The exam is fully digital — you'll type all FRQ code in the Bluebook code editor. Practice writing Java under time pressure, not just reading it.
Build your study plan.
The only way to get good at writing code is to write a lot of code. Reading solutions isn't enough — practice writing methods from scratch under time pressure.
🗓️ 2–3 Months Before
Work through all four units in order. Spend extra time on Unit 4 (Data Collections — arrays, ArrayLists, and 2D arrays), which covers the largest exam weight. Write small practice methods for each concept as you go rather than just reading examples.
📅 1 Month Before
Practice the four FRQ types: Methods and Control Structures, Class Design, ArrayList operations, and 2D Array manipulation. Use released College Board FRQs from previous years. Practice typing your answers — on exam day you'll be coding in Bluebook's editor, not writing on paper.
🌙 Week Before
Review the Java Quick Reference sheet you'll have access to in Bluebook. Make sure you know the String, Math, ArrayList, and array methods on it. Trace through MCQ-style code snippets to sharpen your output prediction skills.
☀️ Night Before
Light review of key syntax patterns and method signatures. The exam is at 12 PM. Make sure Bluebook is installed on your device and your College Board password is memorized — saved passwords won't work on exam day.
What to know before exam day.
The 2026 AP CS A Exam is fully digital. Both MCQ and FRQ sections are completed in Bluebook — including your free-response code, which you type in a built-in code editor (with syntax highlighting but no autocomplete). The Java Quick Reference is available on every question.
What to Bring
- A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
- A pen or pencil for scratch work
- A valid photo ID if required by your school
What NOT to Bring
- Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized electronics
- A calculator (not permitted for any part of the exam)
- Notes or reference materials beyond what Bluebook provides
Section I: Multiple Choice — 40 Questions (50% of score) — 90 minutes
Individual questions and occasional 2-question sets around a shared code snippet. Answer choices run A–D. No penalty for incorrect answers. Questions ask you to read, trace, and analyze Java code — predicting output, identifying errors, and understanding program behavior.
Section II: Free Response — 4 Questions (50% of score) — 90 minutes
The same four FRQ types appear every year in the same order:
- FRQ 1 – Methods and Control Structures: Write methods using conditionals, loops, and expressions.
- FRQ 2 – Class Design: Design a complete class with constructors, instance variables, and methods.
- FRQ 3 – ArrayList: Work with ArrayList operations and algorithms.
- FRQ 4 – 2D Array: Manipulate a 2D array to solve a problem.
Partial credit is awarded on FRQs — always write something for every part even if you're not certain.
How the exam is scored.
AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.
Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.
AP Computer Science A FAQ.
AP CS A is a programming course focused on writing Java code, designing classes, and understanding object-oriented principles. AP Computer Science Principles is a broader conceptual course covering computing ideas — algorithms, data, the internet, cybersecurity, and social impact — across multiple languages. AP CS A is more technical and requires more coding; AP CSP is more accessible to beginners and non-programmers.
No formal experience is required, but it definitely helps. Students who have dabbled in Python, Scratch, or any other language before AP CS A often find the transition to Java's syntax manageable. If you're brand new to programming, expect to put in extra time early in the course learning how to think algorithmically.
No — no calculator is permitted for any part of the AP CS A exam. This is primarily a programming and logic exam, not a math exam. The Java Quick Reference sheet is available in Bluebook throughout the exam.
The 2025–26 curriculum was redesigned with four updated units — Using Objects & Methods, Selection & Iteration, Class Creation, and Data Collections — replacing the previous 10-unit structure. The course no longer tests inheritance, polymorphism, or writing recursive methods. All responses, including FRQ code, are now typed in the Bluebook code editor rather than handwritten.
Register, or confirm your registration.
Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.
Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
Fees aren't paid on this site — your AP coordinator collects them directly. See 2026 AP Exam Fees for current pricing.
Once registered, your exam date and time appear on your course card in My AP. Check the exam schedule and contact your AP coordinator with any questions — they'll let you know when and where to report.
Visit the AP College Board Website for the full registration walkthrough.
