Intro to AP Environmental Science
In AP Environmental Science, you'll explore how natural systems work and how human activity affects them — from ecosystems and biodiversity to energy production, pollution, and climate change.
What are the feedback loops that regulate Earth's climate, and how is human activity disrupting them? How do different energy sources compare in terms of output, cost, and environmental impact?
AP Environmental Science is interdisciplinary — drawing on biology, chemistry, earth science, and data analysis — and emphasizes applying scientific practices to real-world environmental problems.
The AP Environmental Science Exam is scheduled for May 15, 2026 at 8:00 AM.
The exam tests your understanding of environmental systems and your ability to analyze data, design investigations, and propose solutions to real environmental problems.
Thea AP Environmental Science Study Kits.
Below, you'll find Thea's Study Kits for the AP Environmental Science Exam. Unit 9 (Global Change) carries the highest weight at 18% of the exam — it's the broadest and most synthesis-heavy unit. Units 3–6 each account for 13% of the exam.
Note that calculators are permitted and a reference sheet is provided in Bluebook on exam day.
Build your study plan.
AP Environmental Science is interdisciplinary — be comfortable with data, calculations, and written analysis. Practice all three FRQ types before exam day.
🗓️ 2–3 Months Before
Work through units 1–9 in order, building conceptual understanding before moving to application. Units 3–6 each carry 13% — spend proportional time on them. For Unit 9 (Global Change), focus on the causes, feedbacks, and consequences of climate change, since it's the single highest-weighted unit.
📅 1 Month Before
Practice all three FRQ types: designing an investigation, analyzing an environmental problem, and doing calculations. The calculation FRQ appears every year — practice energy, population growth, and pollution math. A calculator is permitted, so practice using it efficiently rather than doing arithmetic by hand.
🌙 Week Before
Review your environmental laws and treaties (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, CITES, Kyoto Protocol, etc.) — these appear frequently in both MCQ and FRQ contexts. Revisit the reference sheet so you know what formulas are provided versus what you need to memorize.
☀️ Night Before
Light review of key concepts. The exam is at 8 AM — get a good night's sleep and arrive early. Make sure your device has Bluebook installed and your College Board credentials ready.
What to know before exam day.
The 2026 AP Environmental Science Exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app. A calculator is built into Bluebook and accessible throughout the exam. A printed reference sheet is also provided and will be mailed to your school — it includes key formulas and constants.
What to Bring
- A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
- A pen or pencil for scratch work
- A valid photo ID if required by your school
What NOT to Bring
- Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized personal calculators
- Notes or outside reference materials
Section I: Multiple Choice — 80 Questions (60% of score) — 90 minutes
Individual and set-based questions. Sets include quantitative data (charts, graphs, tables), qualitative representations (maps, models), and text-based sources. Questions assess a wide range of environmental science practices including investigation design, data analysis, and argumentation.
Section II: Free Response — 3 Questions (40% of score) — 70 minutes
- FRQ 1 – Design an Investigation: An authentic environmental scenario — you describe how to set up an experiment or field study to test a hypothesis.
- FRQ 2 – Analyze an Environmental Problem and Propose a Solution: Evaluate an environmental issue and suggest evidence-based interventions.
- FRQ 3 – Analyze a Problem with Calculations: Same structure as FRQ 2 but includes required calculations. Show all work clearly — the built-in calculator is available throughout.
How the exam is scored.
AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.
Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.
AP Environmental Science FAQ.
Yes — a calculator is built into the Bluebook app and is available throughout the entire exam, including the multiple-choice section. A printed reference sheet with key formulas and constants is also provided. Practice using the built-in calculator before exam day so you're comfortable with it.
The exam regularly tests calculations involving population growth (rule of 70, exponential growth), energy conversions, water usage, pollution concentrations, and efficiency percentages. Most calculations require basic algebra and unit conversions rather than advanced math. The reference sheet provides key formulas.
AP Environmental Science has a reputation as one of the more accessible AP sciences — it doesn't require calculus and has less demanding prerequisites than AP Biology or AP Chemistry. However, the exam is broader than many students expect, and the free-response questions require both writing ability and quantitative skills. Students who take it casually often score lower than expected.
Register, or confirm your registration.
Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.
Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
Fees aren't paid on this site — your AP coordinator collects them directly. See 2026 AP Exam Fees for current pricing.
Once registered, your exam date and time appear on your course card in My AP. Check the exam schedule and contact your AP coordinator with any questions — they'll let you know when and where to report.
Visit the AP College Board Website for the full registration walkthrough.
