Intro to AP Human Geography

In AP Human Geography, you'll explore how humans shape and are shaped by the places they live — studying population, migration, cultural change, political boundaries, agriculture, cities, and economic development through a geographic lens.

Why do people migrate, and how do those movements change both origin and destination? How does globalization spread and reshape cultural practices? What factors determine whether cities grow or decline?

AP Human Geography is often students' first college-level social science course. It builds spatial thinking skills and introduces the tools and concepts geographers use to understand the human world.

Thea AP Human Geography Study Kits.

Below, you'll find Thea's Study Kits for the AP Human Geography Exam. Units 2–7 each carry 15% of the exam, making them equally important to master. Unit 1 (Thinking Geographically) introduces the foundational tools and concepts used throughout the course.

Study Schedule

Build your study plan.

AP Human Geography has a large vocabulary of geographic terms and models. Consistent review throughout the year is more effective than last-minute memorization.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all seven units sequentially. Build a glossary of key geographic terms as you go — the exam is heavily vocabulary-dependent. Use Thea flashcards to memorize models like the Demographic Transition Model, von Thünen's model, and Burgess/Hoyt urban models.

📅 1 Month Before

Practice FRQ writing using data sets, maps, and images. AP Human Geography FRQs often present a visual stimulus — a choropleth map, data table, or photograph — and ask you to analyze it using geographic vocabulary. Practice identifying what type of geographic concept each stimulus illustrates.

🌙 Week Before

Review Units 5–7 — agriculture, cities, and economic development — which are dense with models and theory. Make sure you can distinguish between different agricultural systems, urban land use models, and measures of development (HDI, GNI per capita, etc.).

☀️ Night Before

Light flashcard review of key terms and models. The exam is at 8 AM — an early start. Set your alarm, get a good night's sleep, and make sure your device has Bluebook ready.

Exam Structure
Two Sections · ~2 Hours 15 Minutes

Section I: Multiple Choice — 60 Questions (50% of score) — 60 minutes

Questions are individual and set-based (around maps, images, data, and text). They test your knowledge of geographic concepts, vocabulary, models, and your ability to apply them to specific scenarios.

Section II: Free Response — 3 Questions (50% of score) — 75 minutes

Each FRQ presents a stimulus — typically a map, data table, image, or text — and asks multi-part questions requiring geographic vocabulary and analysis. You must use specific geographic concepts and examples in your responses. Partial credit is awarded across all parts.

Scoring

How the exam is scored.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

Score Scale
What Your Score Means
5Extremely well qualified — most selective colleges grant credit
4Well qualified — most colleges grant credit or placement
3Qualified — many colleges grant credit
2Possibly qualified — limited credit awarded
1No recommendation — credit generally not awarded

Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.

Commonly Asked Questions

AP Human Geography FAQ.

Yes — it's one of the most popular AP courses for freshmen and sophomores precisely because it doesn't have strict prerequisites, covers engaging real-world content, and introduces college-level analytical thinking without requiring advanced math. It's a great way to build AP exam skills early in high school.

The exam regularly tests well-known geographic models including the Demographic Transition Model, Epidemiological Transition Model, Ravenstein's Laws of Migration, von Thünen's agricultural model, Burgess Concentric Zone Model, Hoyt Sector Model, Harris-Ullman Multiple Nuclei Model, and the World Systems Theory for economic development. You should be able to describe, interpret, and apply each of these to real examples.

Not specifically — the exam focuses on patterns, processes, and concepts rather than raw recall of country facts. However, you should be able to identify general world regions on a map and give relevant real-world examples when explaining geographic concepts in FRQ responses.
