Intro to AP Microeconomics

In AP Microeconomics, you'll study how individual consumers, firms, and markets make decisions — and how those decisions produce prices, quantities, and outcomes in different market structures.

Why do firms raise prices when competition is limited? How do externalities cause markets to fail, and what can governments do about it? Why do some workers earn more than others?

AP Micro builds the foundational tools economists use to analyze rational decision-making: supply and demand, cost curves, profit maximization, and game theory — all grounded in real-world market behavior.

About the Test

The AP Microeconomics Exam is scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026 at 12:00 PM.

The exam tests your understanding of economic concepts, your ability to analyze graphs and models, and your written explanation of economic reasoning.

Exam DateMonday, May 4, 2026 at 12:00 PM local time.
EquivalencyAP Microeconomics is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college course in microeconomics.
PrerequisitesNo formal prerequisites. Some familiarity with algebra and graph interpretation is helpful.

Unit 3 (Production, Cost & Perfect Competition) is the highest-weighted unit at 24% of the exam, followed by Unit 2 (Supply & Demand) at 23% and Unit 4 (Imperfect Competition) at 19%.

Study Schedule

Build your study plan.

Economics is best learned by doing — work through graphs and practice problems actively rather than reading passively.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all six units, starting with Unit 2 (Supply & Demand) — the foundation for everything that follows. Master how to draw, label, and shift supply and demand curves before moving on. Units 2 and 3 together account for 47% of the exam.

📅 1 Month Before

Focus on Unit 3 (Production, Cost & Perfect Competition) and Unit 4 (Imperfect Competition). These are the most calculation- and graph-heavy units. Practice drawing cost curves (ATC, MC, AVC) and profit/loss diagrams for all four market structures.

🌙 Week Before

Practice FRQ graph drawing. Know what a correctly labeled supply/demand diagram, profit-maximization diagram, and externality graph look like. Review Unit 6 (Market Failure) — positive and negative externalities, public goods, and government intervention are common FRQ topics.

☀️ Night Before

Light review of market structures and key definitions. AP Microeconomics is at 12 PM — an afternoon start. Rest well, memorize your College Board password for Bluebook, and go in confident. No calculator is permitted.

Test Policies

What to know before exam day.

Format
Fully Digital — Bluebook App

The 2026 AP Microeconomics Exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app. FRQ responses, including graphs, are drawn or typed in Bluebook. No calculator is permitted for any part of the exam.

What to Bring

  • A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
  • A pen or pencil for scratch work (only Bluebook responses are scored)
  • A valid photo ID if required by your school

What NOT to Bring

  • Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized electronics
  • A calculator (not permitted)
  • Notes or reference materials

The exam begins at 12:00 PM local time.

Exam Structure
Two Sections · ~2 Hours 10 Minutes

Section I: Multiple Choice — 60 Questions (66.7% of score) — 70 minutes

Individual questions testing your knowledge of economic concepts, graphs, and models. No penalty for incorrect answers — answer every question. Questions require you to interpret economic graphs such as supply/demand curves, the AD-AS model, and the money market.

Section II: Free Response — 3 Questions (33.3% of score) — 60 minutes (includes 10-minute reading period)

  • 1 Long FRQ: Multi-part question requiring extended analysis, often including graph drawing and explanation of economic reasoning.
  • 2 Short FRQs: More focused questions on specific economic concepts or models.

FRQ graphs must be correctly labeled with axes, curves, and directional shifts. Partial credit is awarded — show all reasoning even if you're unsure.

Scoring

How the exam is scored.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

Score Scale
What Your Score Means
5Extremely well qualified — most selective colleges grant credit
4Well qualified — most colleges grant credit or placement
3Qualified — many colleges grant credit
2Possibly qualified — limited credit awarded
1No recommendation — credit generally not awarded

Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.

Commonly Asked Questions

AP Microeconomics FAQ.

Yes — many students take both in the same school year, since the courses complement each other well. AP Micro covers individual decision-making (firms and consumers), while AP Macro covers economy-wide outcomes (GDP, inflation, monetary policy). They're often taught as half-year paired courses.

No — no calculator is permitted on the AP Microeconomics exam. Most calculations involve ratios, percentage changes, and graph interpretations rather than complex arithmetic.

All four major market structures are covered: perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. You should be able to draw profit-maximization diagrams for each and explain the key differences in terms of price, output, and efficiency. Unit 3 covers perfect competition; Unit 4 covers the other three.

Registration

Register, or confirm your registration.

Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.

Fees aren't paid on this site — your AP coordinator collects them directly. See 2026 AP Exam Fees for current pricing.

Once registered, your exam date and time appear on your course card in My AP. Check the exam schedule and contact your AP coordinator with any questions — they'll let you know when and where to report.
