Physics is a skill, not a list of facts. You build understanding by working through problems — reading solutions alone is not enough.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all 8 units in order. Units 2 and 3 (Forces and Energy) each carry 21% of the exam — spend extra time here. Build physical intuition: sketch free body diagrams, draw energy diagrams, and practice identifying which conservation law applies to each scenario.

📅 1 Month Before

Practice all four FRQ types: Mathematical Routines, Translation Between Representations, Experimental Design and Analysis, and Qualitative/Quantitative Translation. The last type — explaining in words how changing one quantity affects another — is often the most difficult and most neglected in prep.

🌙 Week Before

Review rotational motion (Units 5–6) and fluids (Unit 8) — they cover less time in most courses but appear regularly on the exam. Practice your equation sheet familiarity so you're not hunting for formulas during the test.

☀️ Night Before

Light review of key concepts and equation relationships. The exam is at 12 PM. Charge your calculator and bring pencils for the paper FRQ booklet. Rest well.

Format
Hybrid Digital — Bluebook MCQ + Paper FRQ Booklet

The 2026 AP Physics exam is hybrid digital. You'll view and answer multiple-choice questions in the Bluebook app, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper exam booklet that is collected for scoring. A reference sheet with key equations is provided both in Bluebook and as a printed sheet.

  • A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
  • An approved graphing calculator
  • Several pencils and black or blue pens for the paper FRQ booklet
  • A valid photo ID if required by your school

What NOT to Bring

Exam Structure
Two Sections · ~3 Hours

Section I: Multiple Choice — 42 Questions (50% of score) — 85 minutes

Discrete questions and question sets built around stimulus material (graphs, diagrams, data). Questions test all 8 units and require both conceptual reasoning and quantitative application.

Section II: Free Response — 4 Questions (50% of score) — 95 minutes

  • Mathematical Routines: Solve a multi-part problem using equations and calculations.
  • Translation Between Representations: Interpret or create graphs, diagrams, or equations that represent the same physical situation differently.
  • Experimental Design and Analysis: Design a procedure to test a hypothesis, analyze data, or evaluate experimental results.
  • Qualitative/Quantitative Translation: Explain in words how a quantitative change in one variable affects another, or vice versa.

FRQ answers are handwritten in a paper booklet. Show all work — partial credit is awarded.

How the exam is scored.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
