🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all 7 units in order. Units 1–3 (Thermodynamics, Electric Fields, and Circuits) each carry 17% — together they account for over half the exam. Build strong intuition for electric field lines, potential, and Kirchhoff's laws early since they underpin Units 4 and 5 as well.

📅 1 Month Before

Practice all four FRQ types, paying special attention to the Qualitative/Quantitative Translation type — explaining in words how changing one quantity changes another. Circuits and optics FRQs commonly require annotated diagrams as well as calculations. Don't neglect your diagram skills.

🌙 Week Before

Review Units 6 and 7 (Waves/Optics and Modern Physics) — they're sometimes covered quickly in class but appear on the exam. Know double-slit interference, the photoelectric effect, and wave-particle duality. Review the equation reference sheet so you know what's provided versus what you need to remember.

☀️ Night Before

Light review. The exam is at 8 AM — get a good night's sleep. Bring pencils for the paper FRQ booklet, charge your calculator, and make sure Bluebook is ready.

Format
Hybrid Digital — Bluebook MCQ + Paper FRQ Booklet

The 2026 AP Physics 2 exam is hybrid digital. You'll view and answer multiple-choice questions in the Bluebook app, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper exam booklet that is collected for scoring. A reference sheet with key equations is provided both in Bluebook and as a printed sheet.

What to Bring

  • A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
  • An approved graphing calculator
  • Several pencils and black or blue pens for the paper FRQ booklet
  • A valid photo ID if required by your school

What NOT to Bring

Exam Structure
Two Sections · ~3 Hours

Section I: Multiple Choice — 40 Questions (50% of score) — 80 minutes

Discrete questions and question sets built around stimulus material. Questions test conceptual reasoning, quantitative application, and experimental analysis across all 7 units.

Section II: Free Response — 4 Questions (50% of score) — 100 minutes

  • Mathematical Routines: Multi-part quantitative problem.
  • Translation Between Representations: Interpret or create graphs, diagrams, or equations representing the same scenario.
  • Experimental Design and Analysis: Design, analyze, or evaluate an experiment.
  • Qualitative/Quantitative Translation: Explain in words how a change in one quantity affects another.

FRQ answers are handwritten in a paper booklet. Show all work — partial credit is awarded for correct reasoning.

Scoring

How the exam is scored.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

AP Physics 2 covers thermodynamics (heat, entropy, ideal gases), electricity and magnetism (electric fields, potential, circuits, magnetism), geometric and physical optics (mirrors, lenses, interference, diffraction), and modern physics (photoelectric effect, nuclear decay, special relativity basics). It assumes you've already completed AP Physics 1 or an equivalent course covering mechanics.

AP Physics 2 assumes familiarity with the mechanics content from AP Physics 1 (or an equivalent course). The College Board recommends AP Physics 1 or an equivalent as preparation. Some students take AP Physics 2 concurrently with or shortly after AP Physics 1, depending on their school's sequence.

AP Physics 2 tends to have a lower pass rate than AP Physics 1, partly because it assumes students already know mechanics and covers entirely new territory. Students who have a strong foundation from Physics 1 often find the material manageable — the challenge is the breadth of content (electricity, magnetism, optics, and modern physics) and the conceptual depth required.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
