AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism Line

Intro to AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism

In AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, you'll study electric and magnetic fields, circuits, and electromagnetic induction — the mathematical framework that unified electricity and magnetism into a single theory.

How do electric charges create fields and potentials extending through space? How does a changing magnetic flux induce an EMF? What do Maxwell's equations reveal about the relationship between electricity, magnetism, and light?

AP Physics C: E&M uses integral and differential calculus throughout and is one of the most mathematically rigorous AP courses. It's designed for students pursuing physics, electrical engineering, or related fields in college.

About the Test

The AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism Exam is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 12:00 PM.

The exam tests your understanding of physics concepts, your ability to apply mathematical reasoning, and your scientific thinking skills across multiple question types.

Exam DateThursday, May 14, 2026 at 12:00 PM local time.
EquivalencyAP Physics C: E&M is equivalent to a calculus-based second-semester college physics course covering electricity and magnetism.
PrerequisitesCalculus (AP Calculus AB or BC) required. AP Physics C: Mechanics strongly recommended.

Units 1 (Electric Charges, Fields & Gauss's Law) and 4 (Electric Circuits) each carry 20%. Units 2, 5, and 6 each carry 15%.

Study Schedule

Build your study plan.

Physics is a skill, not a list of facts. You build understanding by working through problems — reading solutions alone is not enough.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all 6 units using calculus. Units 1 and 4 (Electric Fields/Gauss's Law and Electric Circuits) each carry 20%. Master Gauss's Law early — choosing the right Gaussian surface for symmetric charge distributions is a core exam skill tested across both MCQ and FRQ.

📅 1 Month Before

Practice FRQ problems covering circuit analysis with RC circuits, Ampere's Law for magnetic fields, and Faraday's/Lenz's Laws for induction. Know when each of Maxwell's four equations applies and be comfortable with the integral forms. Multi-step derivations are common on FRQs.

🌙 Week Before

Review electromagnetic induction (Unit 6) — RL circuits, LC circuits, transformers, and induced EMF. These topics are high-FRQ priority and are often covered late in the school year. Know your formula sheet contents thoroughly.

☀️ Night Before

The E&M exam is at 12 PM. Light review of Maxwell's equations and circuit behavior. Charge your calculator, bring pencils, and if you took Mechanics yesterday, make sure you're rested for this one.

Test Policies

What to know before exam day.

Format
Hybrid Digital — Bluebook MCQ + Paper FRQ Booklet · Graphing Calculator Required

The 2026 AP Physics C exam is hybrid digital. You view and answer multiple-choice questions in Bluebook, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper exam booklet. A formula sheet is provided. A graphing calculator is required throughout.

What to Bring

  • A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
  • An approved graphing calculator (required for both sections)
  • Several pencils and blue/black pens for the paper FRQ booklet
  • A valid photo ID if required by your school

What NOT to Bring

  • Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized electronics
  • Notes or outside reference materials

AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: E&M are offered on consecutive days and can be taken independently or together.

Exam Structure
Two Sections · 90 Minutes Total

Section I: Multiple Choice — 35 Questions (50% of score) — 45 minutes

Five-choice questions testing conceptual understanding and problem-solving. A graphing calculator is permitted. Questions cover all units and require both reasoning and calculation.

Section II: Free Response — 3 Questions (50% of score) — 45 minutes

Three multi-part problems requiring derivations, calculations, diagrams, and written explanations. Calculus is expected in some solutions. Show all work; partial credit is awarded. FRQs are handwritten in a paper booklet.

Scoring

How the exam is scored.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

Score Scale
What Your Score Means
5Extremely well qualified — most selective colleges grant credit
4Well qualified — most colleges grant credit or placement
3Qualified — many colleges grant credit
2Possibly qualified — limited credit awarded
1No recommendation — credit generally not awarded

Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.

Commonly Asked Questions

AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism FAQ.

Yes — Mechanics (May 13) and E&M (May 14) are offered on consecutive days. Each earns a separate AP score, equivalent to separate semesters of calculus-based college physics. Many engineering students take both.

Yes — Gauss's Law, Faraday's Law, and Ampere's Law are all stated as surface and line integrals. RC and RL circuit behavior involves differential equations. Students should have completed or be concurrently taking AP Calculus AB or BC.

Gauss's Law is one of Maxwell's four equations. It states that the electric flux through any closed surface equals the enclosed charge divided by the permittivity of free space. For symmetric charge distributions (spherical, cylindrical, planar), it makes calculating electric fields much easier than integrating Coulomb's Law directly. It's one of the most-tested topics on the AP Physics C: E&M exam.

Registration

Register, or confirm your registration.

Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.

Fees aren't paid on this site — your AP coordinator collects them directly. See 2026 AP Exam Fees for current pricing.

Once registered, your exam date and time appear on your course card in My AP. Check the exam schedule and contact your AP coordinator with any questions — they'll let you know when and where to report.

Visit the AP College Board Website for the full registration walkthrough.
