AP Physics C: Mechanics Line

Intro to AP Physics C: Mechanics

In AP Physics C: Mechanics, you'll study classical mechanics at the college level — using calculus to analyze motion, forces, energy, and rotating systems with the mathematical rigor expected of physics and engineering majors.

How do derivatives and integrals let us describe motion and forces more precisely? How do Newton's laws generalize to rotating systems, and what does angular momentum conservation tell us about collisions and gyroscopes?

AP Physics C: Mechanics is calculus-based, rigorous, and 90 minutes. Mastery of both physics concepts and calculus application is essential.

About the Test

The AP Physics C: Mechanics Exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 12:00 PM.

The exam tests your understanding of physics concepts, your ability to apply mathematical reasoning, and your scientific thinking skills across multiple question types.

Exam DateWednesday, May 13, 2026 at 12:00 PM local time.
EquivalencyAP Physics C: Mechanics is equivalent to a calculus-based first-semester college mechanics course.
PrerequisitesCalculus (concurrent or prior AP Calculus AB/BC) required. AP Physics 1 strongly recommended.

Unit 2 (Force & Motion Dynamics) carries 23%. Units 3–7 are closely weighted at 13–20%, so every unit matters significantly.

Study Schedule

Build your study plan.

Physics is a skill, not a list of facts. You build understanding by working through problems — reading solutions alone is not enough.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all 7 units using calculus throughout. Unit 2 (Force & Motion) carries 23% — master Newton's laws with derivatives before moving to rotational dynamics. Practice deriving kinematic equations from first principles using integration.

📅 1 Month Before

Work through released FRQ problems. C-Mechanics FRQs commonly require setting up and solving differential equations for motion. Practice multi-step derivations and get comfortable presenting calculus work clearly in a handwritten booklet.

🌙 Week Before

Review rotational dynamics (Units 5–7): moment of inertia, angular impulse, and angular momentum conservation. Know how to apply the parallel-axis theorem and the rolling-without-slipping constraint. Oscillations (Unit 7) — SHM, period, and energy — appear regularly.

☀️ Night Before

The exam is at 12 PM. Light review of calculus applications in mechanics. AP Physics C: E&M is tomorrow — pace yourself if you're taking both. Charge your calculator and bring pencils.

Test Policies

What to know before exam day.

Format
Hybrid Digital — Bluebook MCQ + Paper FRQ Booklet · Graphing Calculator Required

The 2026 AP Physics C exam is hybrid digital. You view and answer multiple-choice questions in Bluebook, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper exam booklet. A formula sheet is provided. A graphing calculator is required throughout.

What to Bring

  • A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
  • An approved graphing calculator (required for both sections)
  • Several pencils and blue/black pens for the paper FRQ booklet
  • A valid photo ID if required by your school

What NOT to Bring

  • Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized electronics
  • Notes or outside reference materials

AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: E&M are offered on consecutive days and can be taken independently or together.

Exam Structure
Two Sections · 90 Minutes Total

Section I: Multiple Choice — 35 Questions (50% of score) — 45 minutes

Five-choice questions testing conceptual understanding and problem-solving. A graphing calculator is permitted. Questions cover all units and require both reasoning and calculation.

Section II: Free Response — 3 Questions (50% of score) — 45 minutes

Three multi-part problems requiring derivations, calculations, diagrams, and written explanations. Calculus is expected in some solutions. Show all work; partial credit is awarded. FRQs are handwritten in a paper booklet.

Scoring

How the exam is scored.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

Score Scale
What Your Score Means
5Extremely well qualified — most selective colleges grant credit
4Well qualified — most colleges grant credit or placement
3Qualified — many colleges grant credit
2Possibly qualified — limited credit awarded
1No recommendation — credit generally not awarded

Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.

Commonly Asked Questions

AP Physics C: Mechanics FAQ.

Yes — calculus is integral to the course. Position, velocity, and acceleration are related by derivatives and integrals; work is computed as a line integral; moment of inertia involves integration over mass distributions. You should be taking or have completed AP Calculus AB at minimum. FRQ solutions are expected to use calculus where appropriate.

Yes — Mechanics (May 13) and E&M (May 14) are on consecutive days and can be taken together or independently. Each earns a separate AP score, typically equivalent to separate semesters of calculus-based college physics.

AP Physics C covers the same mechanics topics as AP Physics 1 but uses calculus throughout, goes deeper mathematically, and includes some topics (like rotational dynamics with integrals) that AP Physics 1 handles more qualitatively. The exam is only 90 minutes vs. ~3 hours for AP Physics 1, but it's more mathematically intense. AP Physics C is the right choice for students heading into physics, engineering, or math-heavy majors.

Registration

Register, or confirm your registration.

Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.

Fees aren't paid on this site — your AP coordinator collects them directly. See 2026 AP Exam Fees for current pricing.

Once registered, your exam date and time appear on your course card in My AP. Check the exam schedule and contact your AP coordinator with any questions — they'll let you know when and where to report.
