Intro to AP Precalculus
In AP Precalculus, you'll build the mathematical foundation that calculus depends on — developing a deep, functional understanding of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
How do different families of functions grow and behave? How do you model real-world relationships with exponential and logarithmic functions? How does the unit circle connect angles, coordinates, and trigonometric ratios in a unified framework?
AP Precalculus is designed to prepare you for AP Calculus AB or BC, or for college-level quantitative courses in any field. It emphasizes function analysis and mathematical reasoning over rote computation.

The exam tests your ability to analyze, model, and apply the families of functions that form the foundation of calculus and quantitative reasoning. A graphing calculator is required for Part B.

AP Precalculus emphasizes function analysis — understanding how different types of functions behave, not just calculating with them. Practice explaining what functions do and why.
🗓️ 2–3 Months Before
Work through Units 1–3 sequentially. Each unit covers a different function family — polynomials and rationals, exponentials and logarithms, and trigonometric functions. Build deep fluency with each: know their graphs, behaviors, inverses, and key properties. Use Thea practice questions after each unit to check understanding.
📅 1 Month Before
Practice both calculator and non-calculator question types. Part A (no calculator) tests your ability to work analytically; Part B (calculator required) tests modeling and application. Practice using your graphing calculator's function graphing, table, and intersection features for efficiency.
🌙 Week Before
Review the FRQ types — especially the two calculator-active FRQs, which involve modeling real-world data with functions. Practice interpreting calculator output in context: what does an x-intercept of a revenue function mean, for example? The FRQs reward contextual reasoning, not just correct calculations.
☀️ Night Before
Light review of key function families and their properties. The exam is at 8 AM — get a good night's sleep. Charge your graphing calculator and make sure Bluebook is installed. Bring pencils for the paper FRQ booklet.
What to know before exam day.
The 2026 AP Precalculus Exam is hybrid digital. You view and answer multiple-choice questions in Bluebook, then handwrite your free-response answers in a paper exam booklet. A graphing calculator is required for Part B of each section.

- An approved graphing calculator (required for Part B of both sections)
- Several pencils and blue/black pens for the paper FRQ booklet
- A valid photo ID if required by your school

Section I: Multiple Choice — 42 Questions (62.5% of score) — 105 minutes
- Part A: 29 questions, 65 minutes — no calculator permitted
- Part B: 13 questions, 40 minutes — graphing calculator required
Section II: Free Response — 4 Questions (37.5% of score) — 70 minutes
- Part A: 2 questions, 35 minutes — graphing calculator required
- Part B: 2 questions, 30 minutes — no calculator permitted
FRQ answers are handwritten in a paper exam booklet. Show all work and interpret results in context — partial credit is awarded for correct reasoning even when a final answer is wrong.
How the exam is scored.
AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.
Scores are released in July 2026 via the College Board website.

Unit 4 (Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices) is part of the AP Precalculus course but the content from Unit 4 is not directly assessed on the AP Precalculus Exam. It's included to prepare students for college-level mathematics and may appear in some school curricula as enrichment. Your energy for exam prep should focus on Units 1–3, which are each weighted equally at roughly 33% of the exam.
Yes — a graphing calculator is required for Part B of both sections (13 multiple-choice questions and 2 free-response questions). For Part A, no calculator is permitted. Make sure your calculator model is on the approved list and that you're comfortable with its function graphing, table, and regression features before exam day.
Yes — that's its primary purpose. AP Precalculus is specifically designed as the bridge between Algebra II and AP Calculus AB or BC. It builds function literacy, algebraic fluency, and the conceptual groundwork for limits and derivatives. Students who complete AP Precalculus with a strong understanding of function behavior tend to succeed in AP Calculus.

Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.
Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
