Intro to AP Psychology
In AP Psychology, you'll explore how the human mind actually works — from the neurons firing in your brain right now to why the person next to you on the bus is doing what they're doing.
Why do we remember some things and forget others? How does a child develop language, morality, or a sense of self? What makes groups conform, obey, or turn on each other? And when the mind stops working the way we expect, how do psychologists classify what's happening and what treatments actually help?
AP Psychology builds the scientific reasoning skills that show up in almost every college major — reading research critically, distinguishing correlation from causation, and evaluating claims with evidence rather than intuition.
The AP Psychology Exam is scheduled for May 14, 2027 at 12:00 PM.
AP Psych tests your ability to apply psychological concepts, interpret research, and build evidence-based arguments across five equally weighted units of study.
Thea AP Psychology Study Kits.
Below, you'll find Thea's Study Kits for the AP Psychology Exam. Since College Board redesigned the course for the 2024–2025 school year, all five units are equally weighted at 15–25% each — no single unit deserves less of your time.
Both free-response questions — the AAQ and EBQ — pull from every unit and lean heavily on research methods, so a balanced approach beats cramming any one topic.
Build your study plan.
The redesigned AP Psych exam rewards applied reasoning and research analysis over rote vocabulary. Content still matters — but knowing how to use it matters more.
🗓️ 2–3 Months Before
Work through all five units in order — they build on each other, and each carries roughly equal weight. Use Thea flashcards to lock in the vocabulary-heavy Units 1 and 2 (biology and cognition), then focus on understanding how the concepts connect across units. Stress, for example, shows up in biology, cognition, and health.
📅 1 Month Before
Shift to FRQ practice. Complete at least 2–3 full AAQ responses and 2–3 EBQ responses using released College Board prompts. Drill the four science practices — Concept Application, Research Methods and Design, Data Interpretation, and Argumentation — because every question ties back to one of them.
🌙 Week Before
Research methods appear on nearly every question, so drill independent vs. dependent variables, operationalization, and research ethics until they're automatic. Practice citing sources explicitly in EBQ responses — losing points for failing to label a source is a common mistake. Time yourself on full FRQs.
☀️ Night Before
Light review of key theorists, disorders, and treatments. AP Psych is at noon — sleep in, eat a real lunch, and arrive early. Make sure Bluebook is installed and your College Board login is memorized.
What to know before exam day.
The 2027 AP Psychology Exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app. All responses — including your FRQs — are typed and submitted automatically. Scratch paper is provided for notes, but only what you enter in the app is scored.
What to Bring
- A device with Bluebook installed and your College Board login memorized
- A pen or pencil for scratch work and planning
- A valid photo ID if required by your school
What NOT to Bring
- Phones, smartwatches, or unauthorized electronics
- Notes or reference materials
Section I: Multiple Choice — 75 Questions (67% of score) — 90 minutes
Questions cover all five units and lean into applied reasoning — expect to interpret research findings, read data tables, and apply psychological concepts to realistic scenarios rather than just recall definitions.
Section II: Free Response — 2 Questions (33% of score) — 70 minutes
- Article Analysis Question (AAQ) — 25 minutes, 7 points: You're given one summarized research study and asked to analyze it from six angles — identify the research method, define variables, interpret statistics, evaluate ethics and generalizability, and connect findings to a psychological concept. Suggested time: 10 minutes reading, 15 minutes writing.
- Evidence-Based Question (EBQ) — 45 minutes, 7 points: You're given three summarized peer-reviewed sources on a common topic and asked to build a defensible claim, supporting it with evidence from the sources plus your own psychology knowledge. You must cite each source explicitly. Suggested time: 15 minutes reading, 30 minutes writing.
How the exam is scored.
AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.
In recent years, roughly 70% of AP Psychology test-takers have scored a 3 or higher, with a mean score around 3.20 — historically one of the more accessible AP exams. Scores are released in July 2027 via the College Board website.
AP Psychology FAQ.
All five units carry roughly equal weight, each contributing 15–25% of the multiple-choice section. This is a change from the old 9-unit format, where Cognition and Clinical Psychology dominated. Cognition (Unit 2) and Social Psychology (Unit 4) still tend to lead MCQ volume slightly, but AP Psych now rewards balanced preparation across all five units — cramming one and skimming another is a losing strategy.
Historically, yes — AP Psychology has consistently been one of the more accessible AP exams, with pass rates hovering in the 60–70% range. That said, the 2024–2025 redesign shifted the exam meaningfully away from pure vocabulary recall and toward applied reasoning, research methods, and evidence-based argumentation. Students who relied on flashcard-heavy prep in the old format find the new AAQ and EBQ sections more demanding. It's still one of the more approachable AP courses — just don't assume it's a free 5.
The AAQ (Article Analysis Question) gives you one summarized research study and asks you to analyze it from six angles — identify the research method, define variables, interpret statistics, evaluate ethics and generalizability, and connect the findings to a psychological concept. It's 25 minutes total (10 minutes reading, 15 minutes writing) and worth 7 points.
The EBQ (Evidence-Based Question) gives you three summarized peer-reviewed sources on a common topic and asks you to build and defend a psychological claim, citing each source explicitly. It's 45 minutes total (15 minutes reading, 30 minutes writing) and also worth 7 points. Both replaced the old free-response format in the 2024–2025 redesign, and both weight research methods heavily.
College Board organizes the redesigned exam around four science practices: Concept Application (using psychology concepts to explain scenarios), Research Methods and Design (evaluating study design and validity), Data Interpretation (reading graphs, tables, and statistics), and Argumentation (building and defending evidence-based claims). Every question — MCQ or FRQ — ties back to one of them. If you can name the practice a question is testing, you can usually name the point it's asking you to earn.
Register, or confirm your registration.
Once you've joined your class section, check My AP for a Register button — clicking it tells your coordinator to order your exam. No button visible means you're already registered automatically.
Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
Fees aren't paid on this site — your AP coordinator collects them directly. See 2027 AP Exam Fees for current pricing.
Once registered, your exam date and time appear on your course card in My AP. Check the exam schedule and contact your AP coordinator with any questions — they'll let you know when and where to report.
Visit the AP College Board Website for the full registration walkthrough.
