In AP Statistics, you'll learn to collect, analyze, and draw conclusions from data — developing the quantitative reasoning skills that underpin research in nearly every field, from medicine and economics to social science and engineering.

How do you design an experiment that actually lets you establish causation rather than just correlation? What does a confidence interval really mean? When is a difference between two groups statistically significant — and what does that word "significant" actually tell you?

AP Statistics rewards students who understand concepts deeply enough to explain their reasoning in words. Calculator output alone doesn't earn full credit — you need to interpret results and justify conclusions.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all 9 units in order — they build on each other, especially Units 1–5 which provide the foundation for the inference units (6–9). Practice interpreting graphs, describing distributions, and explaining randomness in context before moving to hypothesis testing.

📅 1 Month Before

Focus heavily on the inference units (6–9). For every procedure — z-test, t-test, chi-square, slope test — practice the full PHANTOM framework or equivalent: check conditions, calculate the test statistic, find the p-value, and state your conclusion in context. Always write your conclusion in words, not just numbers.

🌙 Week Before

Practice FRQ writing under time pressure. AP Statistics FRQs reward specific, complete statistical reasoning — not vague answers. Revisit Unit 3 (Collecting Data) — study design, randomization, and confounding are frequently tested and easy to underprepare for.

☀️ Night Before

Review key vocabulary and the conditions for each inference procedure. The exam is at 12 PM. Make sure your graphing calculator has fresh batteries. Bluebook provides a digital formula table on exam day, but knowing the formulas conceptually speeds up your work.

The 2026 AP Statistics Exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app. A graphing calculator is built into Bluebook and available throughout the exam. A statistical formula and table reference sheet is also provided digitally in Bluebook and mailed to schools as a printed reference. Exam Structure
Two Sections · ~3 Hours

Section I: Multiple Choice — 42 Questions (50% of score) — 90 minutes

Individual questions and sets based on shared prompts. Questions test all four major skill areas: exploring data, collecting data, probability and sampling distributions, and statistical inference.

Section II: Free Response — 4 Questions (50% of score) — 90 minutes

  • Q1: Multi-focus on statistical practices (data analysis and graphical interpretation)
  • Q2: Multi-focus on study design and probability
  • Q3: Inference — hypothesis test or confidence interval with full reasoning
  • Q4: Multi-focus, synthesizing data analysis, inference, and statistical communication

All FRQ responses must include complete statistical reasoning in context — show your work, state conditions, and interpret results in plain language.

AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered qualifying for college credit, though policies vary by institution.

AP Statistics FAQ.

Yes — a graphing calculator is required for the AP Statistics exam. You can use your personal approved graphing calculator and a built-in Bluebook calculator is also available digitally. Check the AP Calculator Policy for the list of permitted models. AP Statistics uses the calculator more heavily than most AP math exams — be very comfortable with your calculator's list, statistics, and distribution functions.

A formula and table reference sheet is provided in Bluebook and mailed to schools as a printed sheet. You don't need to memorize every formula, but you do need to know which formula to use and how to interpret the output. Students who rely entirely on the reference sheet without understanding the concepts behind the formulas struggle with the free-response section, where full reasoning and interpretation are required.

On AP Statistics FRQs, 'show your work' means writing out the name of the statistical procedure, checking the required conditions, showing the test statistic and p-value calculation (or calculator output), and stating a conclusion in the context of the problem — not just 'reject H₀.' Graders award points for each step of the statistical reasoning process, so a correct final answer with no supporting work earns few or no points. Practice writing complete, contextual conclusions on every practice problem.

Registering after November may carry a late fee, handled through your coordinator. If you transferred schools or started late, your coordinator can usually still order your exam without the late charge.
