AP World History: Modern Line

Intro to AP World History: Modern

In AP World History: Modern, you'll trace the development of the modern world from c. 1200 CE to the present — examining how trade networks, empires, revolutions, industrialization, global conflict, and decolonization shaped the world we live in today.

How did the Silk Roads and Indian Ocean trade networks spread ideas, goods, and disease across continents? How did European colonialism reshape economies and societies worldwide? What forces drove independence movements in the twentieth century?

AP World History takes a thematic, comparative approach — asking you to think across regions and centuries rather than focusing on one nation or civilization.

Thea AP World History Study Kits.

Below, you'll find Thea's Study Kits for the AP World History: Modern Exam. Units 3–6 each carry 14% of the exam — the heaviest single-unit weights. The exam covers c. 1200 CE to the present, with emphasis on cross-cultural connections and big historical patterns.

The exam is writing-heavy — the DBQ and LEQ together account for 40% of your score alongside the multiple-choice section.

Study Schedule

Build your study plan.

AP World History rewards students who can think across regions and time periods, not just recall facts. Practice comparing and connecting events — it's the core skill the exam tests.

🗓️ 2–3 Months Before

Work through all 9 units in order. Focus on the 5 AP Historical Thinking Skills — Argumentation, Causation, Comparison, Contextualization, and Continuity and Change Over Time — as you study each unit. Use Thea flashcards to memorize key events, empires, and turning points.

📅 1 Month Before

Shift to essay practice. Write at least 2–3 full DBQ essays using released College Board prompts. Practice grouping and sourcing documents rather than summarizing them individually. Draft LEQ outlines for all three time period options so you have a plan for any prompt.

🌙 Week Before

Review the AP World History themes — the SPICE-T framework (Social, Political, Interactions, Cultural, Economic, and Technology). Practice SAQ responses — each requires specific evidence, so drill concise, targeted answers rather than long paragraphs.

☀️ Night Before

Light review of key units and historical argument strategies. The exam is at 8 AM — get a good night's sleep. Make sure your device has Bluebook installed and your College Board credentials are ready.

Questions appear in sets of 3–4 around primary sources, secondary sources, images, graphs, and maps. You'll analyze historical evidence and identify patterns across the c. 1200–2001 time range.

Section I, Part B: Short Answer — 3 Questions (20% of score) — 40 minutes

Q1 (required, secondary source) and Q2 (required, primary source) both focus on 1200–2001. For Q3/Q4, you choose between a 1200–1750 prompt or a 1750–2001 prompt — no sources provided for either.

Section II: DBQ (25%) + LEQ (15%) — 100 minutes

  • DBQ (1 hour including 15-min reading period): 7 documents, topics from 1450–2001. Write an argument using the documents plus outside evidence.
  • LEQ (40 minutes): Choose one of three prompts — 1200–1750, 1450–1900, or 1750–2001. Write a fully evidence-based historical argument from memory.

Commonly Asked Questions

AP World History FAQ.

AP World History: Modern covers the globe from c. 1200 CE to the present, with a thematic and comparative approach rather than a nation-by-nation one. AP US History focuses exclusively on American history from 1491 to the present. AP European History focuses on Europe from c. 1450 to the present in greater depth. All three share the same four-section exam format (MCQ + SAQ + DBQ + LEQ).

The course covers approximately c. 1200 CE to the present, organized into 9 units. The DBQ focuses on 1450–2001. SAQ choices span 1200–2001. The LEQ offers options across three time ranges: 1200–1750, 1450–1900, and 1750–2001.

AP World History is considered moderately challenging. The breadth of content is significant — 800+ years across the entire globe — but the thematic approach means you're learning patterns and frameworks rather than memorizing every event in isolation. The writing demands are real: the DBQ and LEQ require organized, evidence-based arguments under time pressure. Students who practice essay writing consistently throughout the year do well.
