Summer after high school graduation feels like freedom—but it also marks the countdown to a brand new chapter. If you're heading to college this fall, you're probably juggling excitement, nerves, and a very long to-do list. The good news? A little prep now can make that transition a whole lot smoother.

Here’s what you can expect and what you should do this summer to set yourself up for success.

Expect A Lot of Firsts

New faces. New routines. New responsibilities. College throws a lot at you fast. You’ll be managing your own time, navigating campus, maybe living with roommates, and figuring out how to balance school, friends, and sleep (good luck with that one if you’re not using Thea!).

This doesn’t mean it’s all stress—far from it. College is also full of freedom, exploration, and opportunities to figure out who you are and what you care about. But it helps to go in ready.

Summer Prep Checklist

1. Get Comfortable With Campus Systems

Every college has its own tech ecosystem. Over the summer, make sure you:

  • Log into your student portal

  • Learn how to check your class schedule, email, and tuition

  • Set up two-factor authentication if needed

  • Get familiar with your learning platform (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.)

It’s boring, but trust us—future you will thank you when classes start and your Wi-Fi’s already working.

2. Buy (Only Some) School Supplies

You don’t need to stock up like it’s back-to-school in 5th grade. Start with essentials:

  • A laptop or tablet

  • Notebooks or a digital note app

  • Pens, highlighters, and sticky notes

  • A sturdy backpack

Most professors will let you know during the first week if you need anything extra—so save the money (and the overpacking).

3. Practice Time Management Now

College = fewer classes, but more work outside of them. Unlike high school, you won’t be spoon-fed deadlines.

Try this summer to:

  • Use a planner or digital calendar

  • Set daily or weekly goals

  • Experiment with studying in blocks (25-45 minutes with breaks)

4. Prep Your Dorm Life (Or Not)

If you’re living on campus:

  • Talk to your roommate ahead of time—figure out what you’re each bringing

  • Pack light—those tiny rooms fill up fast

  • Bring comfort items (a blanket, photos, snacks that taste like home)

If you’re commuting, think ahead about your schedule, travel time, and where you’ll study between classes.

5. Review Core Subjects

You don’t need to re-learn everything. But brushing up on core subjects (like math or writing) can boost your confidence. Especially if you’re testing into placement exams or jumping into gen-ed classes.

You can use Thea to upload old notes or textbooks and instantly create a review set that works for you, not the entire class. No more wasting hours on things you already know.

6. Start Building Habits Now

It’s easier to start new habits before the chaos of college hits.

Start practicing:

  • Going to bed and waking up around the same time

  • Eating regular meals (yes, even breakfast)

  • Moving your body, even if it’s just a walk or quick stretch

  • Taking study breaks that don’t involve scrolling TikTok for 3 hours

7. Let Yourself Be Excited (and a Little Nervous)

It’s okay to not have it all figured out. College isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up, staying curious, and learning how to grow. You’re allowed to feel overwhelmed. You’re also allowed to feel proud of how far you’ve come.

So as you prep this summer, don’t just check off your to-dos—check in with yourself. Reach out to friends. Spend time with family. Celebrate your wins. And remember: you’ve got this.

And when you don’t? Thea’s here to help you study smarter, not harder.
