How to Survive Your College Midterms

Midterms have a way of sneaking up on you. One minute you're figuring out where your classes are, and the next you're calculating how many all-nighters you can realistically survive. But take a breath, because surviving midterms isn’t all suffering. They can be conquered with a solid strategy.
The truth is, the students who manage midterms best aren’t necessarily the smartest. They’re just the ones who prepare intentionally, manage their energy wisely, and know when to ask for help. Midterms are less of a sprint and more of a balancing act between studying, sleeping, eating something besides vending machine snacks, and still carving out time for your brain to breathe.
Start by getting organized. Go through your syllabi, make a list of your exam dates, and note what each test will cover. Once you have the full picture, create a study schedule that breaks down topics day by day. Spacing things out, even if you’re starting a bit late, can drastically reduce your stress and help your brain retain more.
Prioritize your classes based on difficulty and how much material you need to cover. Don’t spend equal time on everything. If you know one subject well, give more attention to the one that’s been tougher. Study actively and don’t just read over notes. Quiz yourself, explain concepts out loud, or try teaching a friend.
Sleep matters more than you think. Pulling an all-nighter might seem productive in the moment, but your brain won’t function at full capacity when you’re exhausted. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep, especially the night before the exam.
Fuel your body with real food. Caffeine and vending machine snacks might be tempting, but your brain works better when it’s properly nourished. Try to keep some fruits, protein, and complex carbs in your routine, even if it’s just a peanut butter sandwich and an apple.
And don’t forget to take breaks. A 10-minute walk or a few deep breaths between study sessions can help clear your mind and improve focus.
